When you first think of the words “Freshman Football”, the thoughts that usually come to mind are “the future”, or “development”. Simply put, the players are just Freshmen now but they’ll be Seniors representing the school at the highest level before we know it. Recently, the Freshman team had their first game against the 6A team Battlefield High School, with Battlefield being heavily favored because of their school size and history of dominance.
The game was held at Kettle Run High School at 6:00 pm on September 3rd, with Kettle Run pulling away early and never looking back. Quarterback Jonah Howells started his first game as a Cougar, putting on a solid performance with an array of passing and rushing touchdowns. Another standout player that day was Wide Receiver Jayden Brown, who recorded 2 touchdowns, one on a punt return, and one on a catch. With a powerful line, a strong offense, and a disruptive defense, the freshmen at Kettle Run were able to blow out Battlefield in a final score of 21 to 0.
The victory was an awesome start for the team, but it seemed to foreshadow something more. Kettle Run has always been consistently good, but greatness is something that only comes once in a long time. With a state championship appearance in the near past and a winning culture surrounding the program, anything seems possible for the Cougars following the freshman team’s inspiring victory.
