This year has been one for the record book as seniors continue to break records and etch their names into Kettle Run history. Through grit and grind, struggle and success, these athletes have accomplished amazing feats that will be remembered long after they graduate. A variety of senior athletes have broken records this year. Both Sofie Haughsdahl and Max McManus broke records in track and field. David Haiss, Andrew Pickett, and Casen Chumley left their mark on the football program. Parker Webb stood out on the swimming leaderboards.

Each one of these athletes have dedicated an enormous amount of time in order to break records in their respective sports.

Track and Field star Sofie Haughsdahl set a record for shot put with a distance of 36’11”. She also recorded personal best Discus distance of 123’1”. Math teacher and track coach, Myraida Davis, has watched Haughsdahl develop into a strong athlete.

“Sofie really improved throughout her high school career,” Davis said. “She worked hard every year, and it showed in her performance. I’m really proud of what she was able to accomplish in her time here. She was also a team leader and motivated her teammates to get better. She was vital to our team and glad to see her break the record.”

Max Mcmanus out performed his competition on the track recording a personal best for the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17 minutes and 21 seconds.

Sophomore Liam Heppard has high praise for the senior distance runner.

“He showed up ready to work every single practice and that’s what separates him from the others. It’s pretty awesome to see him break the record that he worked so hard to achieve. To put in four years of work and have it all pay off in the end, it’s a great story,” Heppard said. “He always worked harder than everyone else and that’s why he’s broken the school record.”

On the football field, dynamic duo quarterback Casen Chumley and wide receiver David Haiss helped lead the team to a 9-3 record with 820 receiving yards. Chumley finished the year with 2,012 passing yards, a school record, and 26 touchdowns. He broke the career passing yards record with 4,140 yards. He also threw 39 career passing touchdowns which broke the old school record. Sophomore Bryce Tenberg believes Chumley helped turn the program around.

“Casen was a great leader on the team and he really took the role of quarterback well, it’s the hardest position in football and he was great, there’s a reason he broke all those records,” Tenberg. “And Haiss, he was the homerun threat for this team and helped make defenses respect our passing game. He could outrun anyone on the field and it showed in the games.”

Andrew Pickett broke the career sack record for the school and put his name in the history books after an illustrious high school career.

“It was truly impressive to watch a friend excell at something he loves and see it all pay off with Christopher Newport University offering him a spot in their football program,” Cage Leader Nathan Pullen said. “He worked really hard to break those records.”

All of these seniors will be remembered and their names etched in stone and will be the models for upcoming athletes.
