The writing center is a place where students can get their work reviewed. “It could be English papers, lab reports, math analysis, stats, history papers, DBQs. Any class, any paper.” The writing center is entirely student-run. The National English Honors Society, or NEHS created it. Students in NEHS get trained to become tutors to assist their peers with various school work and it counts toward service hours within the community.
Leianna Thomas is the president of the writing center. She has many responsibilities “not only to help tutor everybody but I also have to make sure everything is running smoothly”. The writing center enhances your social skills giving you the confidence to talk to peers.
Steven Nguyen, a dedicated member of the writing center, is passionate about helping peers with their writing. “I love reading, I love writing – anything to promote literacy, I’m there for it,” he says. The writing center is a team of talented tutors eager to assist anyone in need.
To schedule a session with a tutor you can sign up through this link that brings you to a signup sheet for an individual session. A teacher could also sign their entire block up for writing checks. Whether you’re in 9th or 12th grade, you’re always welcome. Make sure to stop by room 256 for guidance or advice, Monday through Friday during cougar block. The members won’t just give you answers and change your writing, they ask questions and encourage you to answer and change. The impact of the writing center causes students to eventually enhance their literacy skills. Mr. Golimowski states, “It may not be about the particular piece, but they start thinking like a writer and eventually their writing will improve.” The center can help Kettle run students drastically with exceeding in their academic careers.
