Coffee House is a club that meets up in the library along with Book Club. Librarians Ms. Frazier and Mrs. McGilvery sponsor this club, but it’s mainly student-run. I had the chance to talk with the lead member of the club, senior Rayllah Mincey.
Mincey joined this club in her freshman year after being informed of the club by her friends. When it was her sophomore year, she decided to finally join the club. She commented, ”A lot of the people that were in the club were just really nice people, so I just stayed for the people, but then, I realized that some of these people have really good writing.” Mincey describes the club as “very welcoming” and also says “The people there are very energetic.” The overall feel of the club is extremely diverse and chill and filled with people passionate about writing. Coffee House is still a building community and the members are continuing to build and improve on it.
Usually, what happens in a regular club meeting is that they would share their writing and give feedback and kind, constructive criticism. They would also pair up in groups or by themselves and write short stories for a meeting. Sometimes, they would hold events like Trunk or Treat or make stories for National Writing Week.
There are a lot of people in Kettle Run who like to write and create stories, but they could be very shy and not comfortable with sharing their work. With Coffee House, they can join a safe space where they can branch out on their writing, whether it is a poem, song, short story, or even their feelings, and also listen to diverse writings.
To promote Coffee House to a wider audience, Mincey would like our principal, Mr. Malloy, to talk about it in the morning announcements or have one of the members show off their writing once or twice a month. She also promotes Coffee House on the Instagram account that she runs by posting some of the writing they do and putting up posters in the library window.
If you have a love for writing or want to hang out with a welcoming group of individuals who like to share stories, then Coffee House is the perfect club for you. The club is always on Wednesdays during Cougar Time. By joining, you can put yourself and your work out there and show people truly how creative of a writer you could be!
