Florida Passes ¨Don´t Say Gay Bill¨ inspires similar laws in other states.
April 22, 2022
On March 28th, 2022, The Parental Rights in Education Bill was signed by Florida governor Ron DeSantis. The bill has been called the “Don´t say gay bill¨ by those opposed to it. The bill makes it so discussions of IGBTQ+ are banned from kindergarten to third grade. Limited discussions are allowed in later grades as long as they are deemed age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards. The bill does not explain what these state standards are. Under the bill, parents are also allowed to sue the school if they do not like what their children are being taught. A special magistrate is also able to be requested by parents. These magistrates will be used to determine facts relating to the dispute and to recommend a solution to the state board of education. The law will take effect in Florida on July 1st, 2022.
The Florida law has inspired similar legislation to be proposed in other states. There is a bill in Ohio called house bill 616. The bill shares many aspects with the Florida Parental Rights in Education Bill. If passed it would ban the teaching or providing of any curriculum or instructional materials on sexual orientation or gender identity to students in kindergarten through third grade. The bill will also forbid school educators in grades 4 through 12 from teaching instructional materials on sexual orientation or gender identity in any manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally for students in accordance with state standards. The lieutenant governor of Texas has said he supports the law and he wants to pass a similar legislature in texas.
