By now, we all may think we know Mr. Malloy, but do we really know him well? I don’t mean the man who sits in the front office, behind a big desk, I mean Mr. Malloy after the bell rings. Does anyone know what his favorite sport is, where he would like to travel, and why he wears purple on Thursday? There is more to our Principal than meets the eye.
Mr. Malloy graduated from Potomac Senior High School in 1991. He then went on to get his Bachelor’s Degree in History at George Mason University. Mr. Malloy took a few grad classes at UVA, then earned his Masters Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision from George Mason University. Some different jobs Mr. Malloy has had in his educational career were an instructional assistant, coach, special education teacher, and social studies teacher. Then, 9 years ago, he became the assistant principal here at Kettle Run. After being assistant principal for 4 years, Mr. Malloy was offered a job as principal of Warrenton Middle School. When Warrenton Middle closed in May, the job opportunity for assistant principal at Kettle Run opened up again. Then, when our former principal Mrs. Brill got offered the job of Deputy Superintendent, he applied instead to become our principal.
Now that his experience is covered, it’s worth covering more interesting things about him. Mr. Malloy has 2 kids, Mark and Gloria ,who both go to school here at Kettle Run. He is also the youngest of 5 kids himself. He has 2 older sisters and 2 older brothers. His birthday is on September 25th, and he will be 50 this year! His favorite sport, both to coach and watch. is soccer. But as he has gotten older, he has stated that his favorite sport to play is golf. When asked where he would go if he could take a trip around the world, he responded with: “I would love to travel to Ireland. I would like to visit where my dad’s family is from, and play golf there too”. A fun fact about Mr. Malloy is that he is latino. His mom is from Nicaragua, and she still lives there now. His favorite artist is Prince, which is why he wears purple every Thursday. Additionally, he previously taught in Mexico City at the American School of Mexico, D.F.
One question I asked Mr Malloy was, ¨What would your ten year old self think of you if he met you now?¨ Mr. Malloy responded with, “He would laugh at first, and then think about it and smile. Although I wasn’t the best student academically, I loved school and still do. Many people, (teachers and friends), had such a positive impact on me. They played a huge role in helping me become the person that I am today.¨ The last question I asked him was: ¨What is your favorite thing about Kettle Run?¨ He said; “The people! Although we are all individuals, we are all Cougars! We are family”. Mr. Malloy is excited to be back at Kettle Run, but I am even more excited to see what he does this school year.
